Part 1. Instagram Account Age Requirements

Many parents are unsure if they have access to their teen's Instagram. Instagram claims that it is against the law to grant anyone, even a parent, access to a user's account if they are not the account holder's authorized representative. Any user who is at least 13 years old is considered an approved account holder. You must collaborate with your teen to implement additional security and privacy safeguards throughout their account if they are at least 13 years old in order to keep them secure.

Part 2. How to Set up Instagram Parental Controls

1. Set your teen's profile to private

To ensure that only followers can view your teen's posts and stories, set their profile to private. Users who choose to follow a private profile must first receive approval.

2. Remove unknown followers

Eliminate unidentified followers. This only eliminates your teen's posts and stories from their feed; it does not block them. Your teen's profile may reject a removed follower who tries to refollow if it is set to private.

3. Avoid personal information in the profile's bio description

Keep your personal details out of the bio description. Non-followers can still see a name, profile photo, bio, and website on a private account. Making sure your teen doesn't include personal information like their address, phone number, social networking links, school, location, and more is crucial for this reason.

4. Filter out unwanted comments

Remove undesirable comments from postings by filtering them away. You can choose a general Hide Offensive Comments setting or use the Manual Filter setting to add keywords you don't want to see from your teen's comment settings (Profile > Menu > Settings > Privacy > Comments). Anyone attempting to make a comment will have it automatically removed if it is caught by one of these filters.

5. Block comments from specific people

Block certain people's remarks. In your teen's comments settings, you can choose Block Comments from and then look for people to add to this list. No one who has been added will be informed that they are prohibited from leaving comments on your articles or stories. They attempt to post a comment, but only they can see it; neither your teen nor anybody else can see it.

6. Hide stories from specific followers

Withhold information from a specified audience. It is possible to hide stories from one or more followers so that they never show up in their stories feed or as updates on your teen's profile. This is helpful if your teen tells tales that don't pertain to or are inappropriate for certain followers.

7. Use Close Friends when sharing stories

When telling stories, use your closest friends. Your kid can make a list of the people they wish to share their tales with in a more private setting using Instagram's Close Friends function. By advising your teen to only share tales with the most pertinent people, this provides a comparable alternative to hiding stories from certain Instagram users.

8. Restrict interaction with certain users

Limit your interactions with specific users. Select Restrict by tapping the three dots in the user's profile's upper right corner. Comments made on your teen's postings by the restricted user are only visible to your teen and the restricted user (until the comment is approved). Additionally, direct messages appear as message requests that can be accepted or declined before being viewed.

9. Block users on Instagram

Instagram users can be blocked. If you don't want someone to try to follow your teen or send them any direct messages, you must block them. When your teen blocks someone on Instagram, the person cannot view that person's profile even if they try to search for it.

10. Talk to your teen about Instagram scams

Discuss Instagram scams with your teen. There are numerous that could be mistaken for real account activity, like the Instagram money scam. Make sure your kid and you are both aware of the latest phishing schemes being used on the site, and report any accounts that seem off. Tap the three dots in the top right corner of the user's profile (or direct message conversation) and select Report to report an account.
